Schloss Maissau

Schloss Maissau is a historic Austrian estate located near the homonymous Castle, a building dating back to the 13th century, situated about fifty kilometers northwest of the city of Vienna. The winery is the realization of Josef M. Schuster's desire, who was already working in the wine sector and knew the area well, but wanted to personally engage in production. The project came to fruition in 1999, when Jesef finally managed to rent the prestigious vineyards of the Castle, already famous for centuries for the extraordinary quality of its wines, made with the region's principal white grape variety: Grüner Veltliner.

The Castle of Maissau was built by expanding an ancient watchtower, and its current appearance is due to a renovation dating back to 1870. In ancient archival documents, it appears that the area was already cultivated with vines at the beginning of the 12th century. The estate is located on the southeast slope of Manhartsberg, characterized by a particularly mild climate suitable for vine growing. The vineyards are grown in a magnificent hilly area, which constitutes the last spur of the Bohemian massif. The soils are of ancient marine origin. During the Tertiary period, deposits of sand then gave rise to layers of sandstone later covered by loess rich in mineral elements, particularly iron. The pedoclimatic conditions have proven to be very suitable for the cultivation of Grüner Veltliner, which reaches maturity expressing an elegant and intense aromatic profile.

The estate extends over a total area of 7 hectares, with vineyards aged between 30 and 60 years. The desire to produce healthy and genuine wines has immediately guided the agronomic management towards the principles of organic farming. Since 2017, all wines are certified organic and only sulfur and copper are used between the rows, without resorting to herbicides or chemical substances. The attention in the field allows for the production of high-quality grapes that are then vinified with care and artisanal attention, within the premises of the Gruber winery in Röschitz, a partner of Schloss Maissau and also very committed to enhancing Grüner Veltliner.
