Costador
The Spanish wine reality Costador offers artisanal expressions that reflect the character of the place of origin. The winery is located in the Catalan municipality of Barberà de la Conca, about 40 kilometers north of the city of Tarragona, an area influenced by the concurrent effects of the Muntanyes de Prades and the nearby Mediterranean Sea. Joan Franquet is the soul of the estate, the one who oversees all phases of the production process, from vineyard care to the management of the various stages of winemaking.
The vineyards cultivated by Joan Franquet of the Costador winery are located at the foot of the mountains situated north of Tarragona, at an altitude ranging from 500 to 850 meters above sea level. The soils are characterized by the presence of clay, limestone, and slate, while the climate is a temperate Mediterranean one, resulting from the combination of mild sea breezes and cold mountain temperatures. The vines, mostly very old, include stocks that are up to a century old, and are managed according to the principles of organic farming, integrated with biodynamic practices. In addition to the traditional grape varieties Carignan, Grenache, Trepat, Sumoll Blanc, Sumoll Negre, Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Grenache Blanc, and Muscat, Joan cultivates the non-native Chenin Blanc and Viognier. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, and winemaking is often done with whole clusters, with spontaneous fermentations entrusted exclusively to indigenous yeasts. The entire processing takes place at controlled temperatures, a fundamental aspect of Joan's enology. Sometimes very long macerations are carried out even for white grapes, and for winemaking containers, stainless steel tanks, terracotta amphorae, locally called tinajas, and oak or acacia barrels of various sizes and multiple uses are adopted. Throughout the entire production process, the use of clarification or filtration operations is finally excluded.
The Costador winery interprets the area of Barberà de la Conca with straightforward and genuine labels. Among these, the selection 'Metamorphika' consists of wines made in amphora and is packaged with some
