Château Durfort Vivens
Château Durfort-Vivens is located in the famous Margaux area of the Haut-Médoc district, the birthplace of soft and enveloping red wines, appreciated all over the world. The castle, a historic and elegant property of the area, belonged to the Durfort de Duras family from the twelfth century until 1824, when it was purchased by the Vivens family: hence the name of the winery. In 1937, the estate was acquired by the company that owns Château Margaux, which was previously owned by the same Durfort family, and in 1961 Lucien Lurton, one of the main shareholders of the company and a great wine enthusiast, decided to give new life to the vineyard fields of the castle, dedicating himself to winemaking practices that respect nature and the territory.
A new era thus began for the wine of Château Durfort-Vivens, whose qualities had already been recognized by the mid-nineteenth century when it achieved an excellent position in the Official Classification of Bordeaux Wines of 1855, commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III. AlsoThomas Jefferson, American ambassador to France and third president of the United States, mentions it in his travel diaries as one of the finest and most prestigious Bordeaux.
Today, the Bordeaux of Château Durfort-Vivens are no less. High-level labels coming from plots of land located in the municipalities of Margaux, Cantenac, and Soussan, on soils mainly composed of gravel and sand. The main grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which find in the winery's wines a vibrant and elegant expression. The vines are hand-treated, paying attention to the natural vegetative cycle of the plant, and the winemaking and aging processes are precise and the result of skilled hands: the winery follows and respects the characteristics of the different vintages, uses first-quality barriques, and chooses to age some wines in amphora. The result is deep and sophisticated wines, with fine and well-integrated tannins that tell the story of a winery that has managed to withstand the test of time and is not afraid to reinvent itself in the name of sustainability and innovation.
