Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei

Fonterutoli is a small and ancient village located not far from Castellina in Chianti, right in the heart of the DOCG of Chianti Classico. Here is the winery of the Marchesi Mazzei, which has owned the castle and the surrounding estate since 1435, now extending over 650 hectares, 117 of which are planted with vines. The principal grape variety of this area predominates here: Sangiovese. The vineyards, located on the hills of Val d’Elsa, facing South and South-West, are divided into 5 zones that strongly characterize the final product, each with its own peculiarities: Fonterutoli, Siepi, Baldiola, Belvedere, and Coggio.

The soil of these vineyards consists largely of crushed alberese and sandstone rocks, to the point that the wine derived from these vines is also called "wine of the stones"; hence the choice of viticulture that has the utmost respect for the terroir, with a very low yield of blends per hectare, to ensure a distinctive personality to the wines produced from each vineyard.

In 2006, the company completed the new winery, designed by architect Agnese Mazzei, the same who has signed the projects of other very important wineries in Chianti, including the barrel cellar of Sassicaia; it is a winery with absolutely innovative and exceptional characteristics, to the point of being defined as the "most impressive in Chianti". Among the wines produced, those based on Sangiovese, either pure or blended with Merlot, Canaiolo, and Colorina, take the lion's share, and among these, the "mix 36", a blend of 36 different biotypes of Sangiovese, is particularly interesting.
