Cantina Margò

In the Casenuove district, on the outskirts of the Umbrian capital of Perugia, Cantina Margò rises, a small winemaking reality with a truly artisanal character. The estate was founded in 2008 from the passion of Carlo Tabarrini, who was then employed at the famous Perugina chocolate factory. That year, he began to carry out experimental winemaking in his garage during his free time, harvesting grapes from half a hectare of Sangiovese vineyard rented in a partially abandoned state, until in 2016 he decided to leave his stable job to dedicate himself full-time to winemaking. Although Carlo started from scratch, without vineyards of his own and without a proper educational background, as a child the winemaker could observe his father and grandfather cultivating a small vineyard from which wine was produced for personal consumption. The name of the winery comes from the nickname of Carlo's firstborn daughter, Margherita, nicknamed Margò.

The cultivated hectares of Cantina Margò are just 3, reserved for traditional grape varieties such as Sangiovese, the Trebbiano Spoletino and Grechetto. The vines, which can reach up to 50 years of age, grow on medium-textured soils primarily composed of clay, limestone, and marls. In the vineyard, Carlo applies the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture and the harvest is carried out entirely by hand. In the winery, alcoholic fermentation is entrusted exclusively to indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, and for winemaking and subsequent aging, stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels are used, depending on the wine in question. Throughout the entire production process, the use of stabilization, clarification, or filtration operations is excluded, in maximum respect of the purest varietal and territorial expression.

The wines of Carlo Tabarrini from Cantina Margò cannot leave you indifferent as they possess a strong personality that is absolutely out of the ordinary. Whether they are white, red, orange wines, or refermented in the bottle, Carlo's interpretations are all capable of evoking an authentic artisanal dimension.
